Common Myths About Diamonds

By

Diamonds are precious gems that give many people joy, are exchanged between loved ones, and are the essence of elegance, romance, and fiery beauty. However, despite these beautiful gems having been around for so long there are still many common myths relating to diamonds. Some of these are outlined below:

Diamonds are the most expensive of all precious stones: This is not true, as there are quite a lot of precious stones that are more expensive and rarer. However, do bear in mind that the four Cs will determine the value of any diamond.

Small diamonds are not worth as much as larger ones: This is another myth. It is the four Cs of any diamond that determine its value and not the size. So you could have a small diamond that is of higher overall quality than a much larger one and is therefore worth more.

All diamonds look the same: To some degree this might be true. To the untrained eye a flawless diamond may not look particularly different to one with imperfections at first glance. However, things like the clarity and cut of a diamond can affect the way in which it looks and sparkles. If you are buying diamond jewelery from a jewelery store you will find that all the diamonds look fabulous, because the lighting is created to make sure that they all look beautiful. However, in real life when it is actually been worn out and about normally the difference will become more clear.

Diamonds are whittled: When a diamond is cut many people think that it is whittled, leaving shavings or chunks which can then be turned into smaller diamonds. However, this is not the case, as most of them are actually ground down.

Emerald cut diamonds are the priciest ones: There are many people that are under the impression that an emerald cut is the priciest of all diamond cuts. However, this cut is actually the closest one to the natural shape of the stone, which means that it requires less work and time to cut. This makes it amongst the least expensive of the cuts.

Diamonds make great investments: If you are a high flying diamond dealer and you buy diamonds at the right price then this could be true. However, for the average person diamonds are not investments but things of beauty to be enjoyed in stunning pieces of jewelery or ornaments.
